Saint Paul's United Methodist Church Theme: "Christ's Call to Life"
The big idea - - Jesus Christ came to call us to a new way of life. His ministry was counter-culture which resulted in rejection and suffering. To respond to His call requires courage and commitment displayed by Jesus himself on the cross. His ultimate glorification in the resurrection, though, is God's final stamp on the reward of being a faithful disciple.
WEEK ONE (February 24th) Jesus' Own Decision - Dr. Dan In his baptism and temptation, Jesus found confirmation of his true identity. He was God's Son. We may experience similar struggles in finding our true selves and affirming our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
WEEK TWO (March 3rd) Popular Culture Rejects Jesus - Pastor Craig Stories such as Jesus' interpreting scripture in his hometown synagogue, reaction from contemporary religious leaders and from the Romans indicate people in authority were threatened by Jesus. His rejection was wide spread, as evidenced by the mob scene in Jerusalem during the crucifixion.
WEEK THREE (March 10th) Jesus' Message - Dr. Dan What was Jesus teaching and preaching that was so radical and threatening? What was the foundation of his message? What is the crux of the gospel?
WEEK FOUR (March 17th) Answering the Call - Pastor Craig We know many did respond to Jesus' call. His disciples seemed to drop everything and out of faith follow this charismatic leader. Scriptures indicate he drew crowds and that many who were touched by him followed him and supported his ministry. What are the similarities in the way people respond to his call today?
WEEK FIVE (March 24th) Sacrifice - - the Cross - Pastor Craig Jesus seemed to know that his message would lead to suffering. He seemed steadfast in his journey to Jerusalem. He seemed unwavering in his message when confronted with cultural authorities and the threat of death. How are we called to sacrifice in our own life of faith?
WEEK SIX (March 31st) Glorification - - God's ultimate message of grace - Dr. Dan The resurrection is God's ultimate 'YES.' Life with meaning is the gift of God...and eternal life. The message is complete. While the answers offered by the world fail, God's promises will be fulfilled. Can we live our lives with that hope? Can we live the life of faith to which Jesus calls us? |
